Surfing near North Sea oil and gas fieldsTo the west of Aberdeen stretches Royal Deeside, the valley of the River Dee. To the east is a coastline of sandy beaches and the North Sea. It's about a half-hour drive from Union Street in the city to rolling hills and countryside.

The University of Aberdeen has a campus at King's College, about a mile north of the city, and at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, which is a 10-minute bus journey.
The Robert Gordon University is based at Garthdee, about 2 miles south of the city.
